One Day Technical Seminar on "Cost Control and Quality Improvement in Steel Manufacturing"

As you are kindly aware, over the years, the Induction furnace Industry has expanded considerably and made its presence felt in the Indian Steel Sector, apart from playing a major role in the economic progress of the country. All India Induction Furnaces Association (AIIFA) is an effective link and medium of communication between the Induction melting furnace units and various Ministries of Government of India, Professional Institutions and R&D Centres.

There is no doubt that, India is finally going to occupy the 2nd top position in the steel producing countries, after China in the present decade. India, with the per capita steel consumption around 50 kg has a long way to go which also indicates that there is a lot of potential for increasing the steel consumption in India. Therefore, let us assume that the new decade i.e.; 2010 -20 is the decade for India and Steel industry in particular because steel will remain the backbone of India's economic development. The demand for steel in India is likely to go up further in the current fiscal backed by a healthy demand from long steel products used in construction, the activity of which is set to pick up due to low interest rates and fall in property prices.

In addition to integrated primary steel producers, India is a unique country in the world where almost 50% steel is produced from the secondary steel sector which includes Electric arc Furnace, Induction Furnace and Re-Rolling mills. Although, the no. of Electric arc furnaces are not very large say around 50, almost 1300 Induction Furnaces and more than 1800 re-rolling mills are in operation. Therefore, the secondary steel producers are equally important in Indian scenario.


According to International Energy Association (IEA) global energy demand will grow by 55% by 2030. India is the 6th largest energy consuming and 5th largest GHG emitting nation in the world. The iron & steel sector in India consumes about 20% of total energy consumed in industry and plays significant role in Energy Conservation. The steel industry uses energy to convert iron ore and scrap into steel. If the steel sector wants to stay competive, it must plan for a sustainable energy future.

Challenges such as Energy Security, Environment, Global Warming Infrastructure, Technologies, Skilled manpower, etc. need to be addressed and specific task force to be created at the level of Steel Ministry, Govt. of India for each of the above areas with experts in the field and industry to prepare a short-time and long time Road Map to overcome these issues.

Keeping in view of the above, a Seminar on "Cost Control and Quality Improvement in Steel Manufacturing" Jointly Organized by National Institute of Secondary Steel Technology (NISST) and AIIFA as well as supported by Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) & Joint Plant Committee (JPC), in order to create awareness vis-a-vis latest technology related to Energy Efficiency Improvement in this sector. The topics selected for the Seminar are listed below:

  • Scrap Selection and Segregation- Minimizing Harmful Contaminants
  • Present and Future Scenario of Steel Industry
  • Technological Advancements in Steel making
  • Energy Audit - a Systematic Approach for Energy Efficiency Improvement
  • BIS Quality control issues and Quality standards.

Hope, the topic selected for the Seminar is perhaps the best suitable one in the present Scenario when the main focus of the industry is on compatibility to BIS quality standards and Energy Efficient Technologies.
